Welcome Letter-Introduction

Welcome to the blog: An Archive of Archiving. The goal of this blog is to educate vistors on the role of archivers and to open a discussion about their activities. The life of an archivist has changed materially over the years, especially from phyical collections to digital collections. The Society of American Archivist(SAA) has a code of ethics and I would like to begin by quoting the stated purpose of an archivist.

"Archivists select, preserve, and make available historical and documentary records of enduring value"(SAA,2005).

What do you think is the role of an archivist? Please post your comments.

I must admit I don't know much about archivist. I know that archivists are interested in collecting, organizing, and maintaining control of information for permanent safekeeping. I guess that the difference between storing and archiving is that, that you are making it permanently available while storing can be for temporary or less than permanent needs. Digital storage may face the same problems as physical storage. After all technology changes so rapidly now that finding a storage solution may be an ongoing problem.

To preserve. Without archivist we would not be able to have most of the information we have today. Whether it is keeping it in the old document form and in tack. To digitizing and updating the information to our modern technology.

I really don't know that much about archiving. However, I would think the job of an archivist would be to preserve information that is important to the county or community that they work in. I would hope that they would try to continue to preserve both ways digital and print.
